Where is he now?
Peter Schmeichel
Peter Schmeichel is without question the greatest goalkeeper in the history of Manchester United. In fact, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers ever.
A charismatic keeper with presence (he constantly shout at his own defenders) and excellent shot stopping, he was rarely ever beaten from outside the box in his whole United career. He was also the best in the world when it comes to one-on-one attacker versus goalkeeper situation. Spreading his huge frame high and wide in a star shape, this both put the player off and made the target to aim smaller.
After the unforgettable Champions League victory in the 1999 treble season, Schmeichel decided to leave United for Sporting Lisbon and in the first season helped them to win their first title in 17 years.
He then shocked everyone when he joined Aston Villa in 2001, and even greater shock to United fans when he signed for Manchester City in 2002. He finally retired from professional football for good in 2003.
He then worked as a pundit for BBC until 2005. In 2006, Schmeichel was a contestant on BBC’s popular Saturday Night TV programme, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. He recently appeared on ‘The Weakest Link’ in the UK, but was voted off as the weakest link in the first round.
