AC Milan captain, Paolo Maldini will be doubtful to face Manchester United for the Champions League second leg semi-final due to injury.

The 38 year old defender, who is aiming to reach the final of Europe’s top club competition for the eighth time, is struggling to shake off a knee injury he picked up in Milan 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford last week.

While Maldini has a slim chance of starting the game, Gary Neville has already been ruled out by an ankle injury.

United can however welcome back both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, or at least one of them, allowing Alex Ferguson to move Gabriel Heinze from the centre of the defence to his favoured left back position.

Three men, Heinze, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes are one caution away from a ban, although Ferguson will hope the trio will remain focused on streering United to what would be their only third European Cup final.

But a better statistic for United followers is that their club has not lost a European tie after winning their first leg since 1958 and have never done so under Ferguson.
