United Treble Dreams Shattered
Manchester United dreams of a second treble in eight years were shattered after first half goals from Kaka and Clarence Seedorf and Alberto Gilardino’s 78th minute strike were enough for a 3-0 memorable win in the Champions League semi-final at the San Siro.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s team chose the worst night possible to turn in one of their poorest display of the entire campaign, with Cristiano Ronaldo among the biggest letdowns.
Credit has to be given to Gennaro Gattuso who shackled the recently double PFA Crown to just a mediocre player, but there were plenty others of around him who did not perform either.
Rooney, Giggs, Scholes and particularly Carrick were inefficient, with routine passing went astray with unnerving regularity, loose balls were snaffled by Milan players and their famously counter attack play, was nowhere to be seen.
Their defence, supposedly helped with the return of Vidic were almost like school kids, probably worst, with mistake after mistake cost them all three Milan goals.
In contrast the home team, especially Kaka, Seedorf and Gattuso were impressive, winning almost the entire midfield battle with ease.
So, rather than an all English final, it was the Italians, so nearly expelled from the tournament for their part in the match-fixing scandal, will go to Athens, eager to seek revenge against Liverpool amazing win in Istanbul two years ago.
