England provided a confidence and committed performance against Brazil, going into a tough do-or-die qualifier against Estonia in five days.
David Beckham again was a different class above the rest after a set-piece wizardly saw his accurate freekick picked out the run of John Terry for the first goal for a senior England player at the new Wembley Stadium. Brazil then scored in injury time through Diego to denied England a famous victory.
Not to say that England was flying though, as they were pinned at their own half much of the first half period but thanks to great defending by John Terry and Ledley King, Brazil, lead by Kaka and Ronaldinho were all below par and never really got into the game.
Frank Lampard was pretty quite but Steven Gerrard was at his best on the holding role, with surging run from deep and well timed tackles but were overshadowed only by the brilliant of David Beckham.
While the attitude and passion were in abundance, England midfield quartet still have plenty to do as they were unable to stamp the authority against world class teams.
And with Michael Owen still far from his best, Steve McClaren will hope another David Beckham masterpiece will help them beat Estonia, a heavy burden for one man to carry.
