Is Darren Bent Worth That Much?
When Darren Bent signed for Tottenham for a club record 16.5 million pounds, everyone must be wondering, is he worth that much?
The fee beat Spurs previous record of 11 million pounds for Sergiy Rebrov in 2000. It takes the club offseason spending over 20 million pounds after the arrival of Wales leftbak Gareth Bale.
An Englishman worth that much must raise some eyebrows, but the stats don’t lie. No English player has scored more than 31 Premier League goals Bent has hit in the past two years. His tally of 31 is one more than Wayne Rooney and four more than Frank Lampard and bettered only by Didier Drogba and Thierry Henry. Being only 23 years old must have also boost his value.
And having landed Bent for a club record, he will be the first choice striker, which may force Jermaine Defoe to seek a transfer to a club where he would be the first choice. Still, Darren Bent has a lot to prove, to show that he is worth that much.
