Ramos Faces Bigger Challenge After Carling Cup Win
(Photo : Ramos was hit on the head by a bottle a year ago today)
Juande Ramos may have secured legendary status among Spurs’ fans after the famous Carling Cup win, but now the players need some reality check and face bigger challenges in the Premiership.
Being in 11th place may not be Ramos fault, due to having a bad start to the season when Martin Jol was coach, but Spurs under Ramos have now beaten Chelsea and Arsenal and were very unlucky not to beat Manchester United.
The same couldn’t be said for previous manager Martin Jol, who only managed to beat one of the top four in one occasion. Eventhough, he took the club to two fifth-placed finishes in the last two seasons, his poor start of the season cost him his job.
While the players still have a lot to prove, they are fitter, quicker, comfortable and are fighting, closing down and progressing under Ramos, in a very short few weeks.
But the fact that they are in mid table, Ramos knows that the pressure for him to deliver in every match is even greater with the fans huge expectations after the Carling Cup win. While their home matches have been impressive, it’s their away games that have been poor (they have lost 10 games, 6 of them are away and have lost 3 games in their last 5 away).
While challenging for the Premiership title this season is totally out of the question, I believe that Ramos will stamp his mark during the summer transfer window, and next season, Spurs ambition for a Champions League place may not be too far away.
