Arsenal season came to a low when they were knocked out from the Champions League quarterfinal, and now with the English Premier League matches left with only 5 games, they can kiss their season goodbye.
Arsene Wenger knows well enough that they will go to Old Trafford on Sunday needing a win to keep alive their faint title hopes, and with United clear by six points at the top of the table and in fine form, it won’t be easy.
Surprisingly, many pundits feel that Arsenal’s season is a failure when they actually performed far better than anyone else expected during the start of the season. They played the most entertaining football ever, smashed Slavia Prague 7-0, became the first English team to beat AC Milan at the San Siro and even beat Bolton 3-2 after two goals and one man down.
Clearly, it all started when Eduardo’s season ended by a Martin Taylor’s tackle as Arsenal draw 2-2 at Birmingham. Since then, they have failed to win in 5 EPL games. I have written on February on how “Eduardo Loss Will Hurt Arsenal Big Time“.
But it was not just Eduardo’s loss that hurt Arsenal, it was their over reliant on Adebayor that cost them. The in-form Robin Van Persie got injured while playing for Holland and has netted only once since returning while Bendtner did not live up to expectations. Fabregas goals have come rather scarcely while the other players were just not contributing enough.
This can be seen from their conversion rate which is only mid-table while their aggresiveness is a little bit lower than the others. They are not making enough tackles.
Nobody knows why Arsene Wenger did not buy a striker during the transfer window nor why he believed his squad contained enough quality centre-halves already. That did not look the case at Anfield on Tuesday, Phillipe Senderos proving once again that he doesn’t quite measure up at the top level while Gallas this season, one time too many, loss his bearings at the back.
However, what is more baffling, is that why he didn’t use Theo Walcott more often. His pace and skills would surely troubled defenders and with Rosicky injured, Arsenal lack penetration from the wings.
It looks like another trophy-less season for Arsenal yet again. While many think that Arsenal are still young and will only improve, another miscalculation next season will be a disaster to a team that deserve so much more.
