Anelka Joins Chelsea For 15 Million Pounds

Filed under: Chelsea — Chole @ 4:34 am

Chelsea have completed the signing of Nicolas Anelka from Bolton for 15 million quids.

The Frenchman who first signed for Arsenal in 1997 for only 500,000 pounds, now has an impressive resume with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris St Germain, Liverpool, Man City and Bolton. Although widely known for his attitude problem, the striker is a natural finisher and for Chelsea to pay 15 million for him is a bargain compared to what they pay Schevchenko !!

Moreover, Chelsea are without Didier Drogba and Solomon Kolou, who are away at the African Cup of Nations, while Andriy Shevchenko has an ankle injury.

Mourinho Pays For Being Too Defensive?

Filed under: Chelsea — Chole @ 8:36 am

mourinho_jose_d.jpgThe rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving or being sacked has always been the talk of the town during pre-season but when it did happened, everybody was shell shocked of the timing. Only six games to the Premiership season and one Champions League match, Thursday’s surprise announcement of Mourinho departure from Chelsea now left everyone looking for the most logical reason why he left or actually being sacked.

It was no secret that Jose Mourinho enjoyed a less than ideal relationship with big spending Russian owner Roman Abramovich, with Mourinho was said to be angered with the boss interference in team affairs. The lavish signings of Andriy Schevchenko last season but somehow Abramovich sudden change of policy must have a direct affect to the troubled relationship especially with the long list of injuries that Chelsea are suffering now.

Perhaps it was simply the case that Abramovich doesn’t merely want trophies for his money but also a team that plays sensational football. In Manchester United, Real Madrid or Liverpool, you will find football clubs, rich with tradition and known for their style of play with followers all over the world. But Chelsea are just another football team, with no sense of playing style nor with hardcore fans in other part of the world.

Mourinho preferred 4-3-3 formation, while attacking on paper, too often became a bone crushing 4-5-1. His tactics has always been direct with at least one or two holding midfielders but while he is often said to be overly defensive, he still have the common sense to commit to an English backbone in John Terry and Frank Lampard.

Four domestic league titles in the past five seasons is an awesome record for a manager, although with no Champions League trophies during his three years at Chelsea, two semifinals suggested that Chelsea would get there in the end. The celebrated Sir Alex Ferguson, after all, has only managed one European Cup in over 20 years.

Man Utd Started Miserably While Rivals Grabbed Points

Filed under: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United — Chole @ 8:45 am

sfnfro113.jpgOne game does not make a season, but to title chasers, one point can make a differerence as Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all grabbed three vital points on the start of the new season while Champions Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw against Reading at Old Trafford yesterday.

To add insult to injury, Wayne Rooney suffered a hairline fracture to his left foot which could rule him out for around three months, a major blow to both club and country, who were already facing a real battle to qualify for Euro 2008.

With Rooney out of the picture, Sir Alex Ferguson might field Carlos Tevez as early as Wednesday as United prepare to face Portsmouth at Fratton Park in an away game. However, fans would have to wait longer for the combination of Rooney/Tevez to materialised.

But Sir Alex would also be anxious to see their rivals showing tremendous fighting spirit with Chelsea and Arsenal all came from behind to beat their opponents. Chelsea had debutants Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda on the scoresheets while Michael Essien lashed home a curling first time shot to get them back infront after Birmingham took a shock lead.

At the Emirates Stadium, Alexander Hleb scored on the 90th minute as Arsenal produced a remarkable late fight back, after the Gunners looked set for a shock defeat when Jens Lehmann’s early blunder had gifted David Healy a debut goal.

United Win Community Shield, But Understrength Chelsea Showed More Resilience

Filed under: Chelsea, Manchester United — Chole @ 4:33 am

rooney_e275.jpg

As so often been the case, the Community Shield may not be the best indicator of who will win the league in nine months time. More so, if Sir Alex Ferguson believes in superstitious mambo jumbo, he should be aware of how Community Shield winner is often said will not win the Premiership title. Still a win is a win.

Not just that, Manchester United showed more sharpness and flair, and their passing are always a joy to watch. And if you look at it, they have fielded a near full strength squad, of course without Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Neville and a few others, but still almost a carbon copy of their title winning squad.

In comparison, Chelsea were also without many key players but their most important player, Didier Drogba was out due to injury thus opted to play without a striker with Shaun Wright Philips and Malouda in attacks.

Their strategy did pay off as they flooded the midfield area and gained control of the play but with no one to hold the ball upfront, they never really threatened Edwin van der Saar. In fact, this was all too familiar last season as they took control of the game but failed to score against their opponents.

With the opening game starting this Saturday, Jose Mourinho must be anxious to get his strikers ready while Sir Alex would be more worried than ever when his top defenders are showing frailties at the back. Still, welcome back English Premier League and in a week time, our life will be complete.

Drogba Strikes Again…But More Misery For Terry

Filed under: Chelsea — Chole @ 2:52 am

sfnche119.jpgDidier Drogba notched his first pre-season goal after his 80th minute strike lifted Chelsea to a 1-0 victory over South Korea side Suwon Bluewings in a friendly match.

It was their second victory of their US tour, after a 2-1 win over Mexican side Club America at the weekend. And they are scheduled to meet Los Angeles Galaxy who will debut their new star David Beckham if he is fit to play.

However, the bad news is that, Chelsea’s captain John Terry had broken a toe in his right foot during the match. An while he needs further check to determine the length of any absence, Jose Mourinho must be thinking about his defensive cover since Wayne Bridges was also sidelined for three months with an injured pelvis.

Frank Lampard Is Going Nowhere

Filed under: Chelsea — Chole @ 12:47 am

frank-lampard.jpgThe story of Frank Lampard leaving Chelsea for Barcelona started when his agent was caught on camera holding a Spanish DVD, which was still a mystery, as agents should know better how rumours get started.

But in reality, the thought of Chelsea letting Frank Lampard go is almost ridiculous, since the star midfielder has been one of the most consistent player in the club and considered as their prize asset.

Let’s just forget his form for England, but in the Premiership, he is by far including Paul Scholes, one of the most influential player in midfield, has a knack of running from deep, and score great goals, most of them from outside the penalty box.

While reports have mention that Chelsea refused to meet his wage demands, and Barca 12 million pounds bid was turned down, it is almost impossible to differentiate between tabloid tales and hard facts.

But if you think logically, there is no way Frank Lampard is leaving this Chelsea team, well, at least for now……….. as there is no reason for him leaving.

Chelsea Sign Claudio Pizarro - Another Free Transfer

Filed under: Chelsea — Chole @ 9:32 am

th1_a16489501178100749a.jpgWhile Manchester United already spent nearly 50 million pounds on new players, Chelsea are comfortable enough with signing players on free transfer, and Claudio Pizzaro from Bayern Munich is another after already landed Steve Sidwell and Alex last month.

But with their new policy is kind of expected, since the crazy days that followed Abramovich’s takeover four years ago - from 110 million pounds in 2003 to 91 million pounds and 53 million pounds before rising to 66 million pounds in 2006, this year dramatic drop is due to last year pay rise for both Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko who command around 130,000 pounds a week.

Nevertheless, the signing of Pizzaro would add further competition and pressure for Shevchenko, who might realises by now that Mourinho would opted for a lone striker formation and two wingers, which currently favours Didier Drogba.

Pizzaro, scored 15 goals in each of his first two seasons in Munich, but has since found them harder to come by, netting 41 in the league in the next four campaigns. Bayern Munich have just recently signed Luca Toni from Fiorentina, which sends Pizzaro further down the pecking order, but has mention that his ambition to joining Chelsea is due to winning trophies.
